How much value are you REALLY giving?

No Cash Value

“The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon the way we occupy that place”  St Therese de Lisieux

We occupy places in our families, in our work lives, in our communities in our clubs, in the lives of our friends and acquaintances. The quote from St Therese de Lisiuex questions our occupancy of these places from a stand point of value.

Just because we are in these places  and occupying space does not necessarily mean that we are adding value.

There are many ways to look at the places we occupy in life and a question of value is always an interesting question. Our value, as the quote says “depends on the way we occupy that place”.

So if you think of all of the places that you occupy……. are you adding value, or just taking up space? …. and what does value mean to you when you think about it in this way?

Let me know in the comments!

  1. I think I add value in most spaces I occupy but there are some where I don’t think I add enough value.

Like at home for example. Being at home is about juggling kids, wife, blogging, writing and developing myself. Really home shouldn’t be about juggling

    Nice post Mick!

  3. Hi Mick. I had another thought while reading your post. There’s also the idea of how we occupy our ‘own’ space. Ever notice how some people, when they’re not in a good place, take up a smaller space, both verbally and spatially? And when things are flowing, dynamic and good, we somehow take up more space, hopefully adding more value, be it intellectually, spiritually or energetically. Some people might call it one’s energy, or their aura for the more spiritually-minded. Your piece made me think of how we represent ourselves, in our own, portable spaces – spaces that intersect with others. That’s a sign of a good post, when the ideas cascade to all kinds of places.

    • Thanks Mandy, I am going to expand on this post prompted by the questions that Paul asked, and now with this contribution…. a couple of good posts coming up I do believe!

  4. When I walk into the room, I get a standing ovation…completely kidding there (my attempt at humor). I agree with your points Mick about just because we are there, does not mean we are adding value. And to add to your thoughts, I think we are wasting our time if we do not bring value.

    • Thanks Alex, an integral part of being in a position to add value is being aware of the space you are currently occupying and then doing what you can to add value, otherwise I agree you are just wasting time (and space)

  5. Mick,

    I love the quote.

Value or the value we add to a situation or place is an interesting discussion point. Jim Rohn’s work deals a great deal with it, however he refers to the marketplace but the principles are still the same.

There are a few immediate thoughts I have here; 1) do we underestimate our value 2) do we over estimate our value 3) do we not even consider what our value is.

I think there’s the possibility of a great post there!

Great post and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Regards

    Paul
