An eternity one second at a time.

As another new year approaches, I could give you tips about making new years resolutions, or give you more tips on how to guarantee you fail at those resolutions… but this year I want to focus on presence.

An eternity one second at a time

The sweeping
ticking
second-hand,
marking
the
steady
passing
of time.

Eight
Six
Four
Zero
Zero
times
a day.

Each tic
pregnant
with
promise
or pain.

Each
tic
a potential
beginning
or end.

Each tic
separated
by silence.

A brief
emblem
of the
infinite
nature
of time
yet
impermanent
nature
of being.

Each
tic
providing
a place
to panic
or
a place
to rest.

My wish for your new year and mine

For your new year I hope that each of those brief silences is an opportunity to rest, not panic. If troubles do befall you, I hope that you can learn to sit with your sadness and rest in the silence, and that you are surrounded by people who will help you to be resilient and deal with whatever the circumstances are. Overall, I hope that the new year is one of happiness for you and your family and friends.

I want to remind you of the gifts mentioned in my xmas post

To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, an example, and to yourself, respect.

I’ll be concentrating on being more present in each and every moment and trying to give these gifts throughout the year….. what will you be doing?

Old reliable.. Going analogue

Stuck with silly season brain fade as I return to duty today….

I love my gadgets, but sometimes old reliable analogue technology comes in handy.

So today the digital tools get put down (well most of them) and I’m breaking out the tool that is mightier than the sword (and a lot easier to carry around without getting arrested) and few sticky notes.

How to stop being afraid !

Get over Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

If you have ever spent any time studying any form of management or self development then someone would have subjected you to Maslow’s heirarchy of needs. If you are like me, you would probably be happy to never hear that term again (as relevant as it is).

It doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for Maslow, in fact one of Maslow’s quotes provides a great opportunity for reflection.

The top end of the pyramid

Abraham Maslow is quoted as saying “We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments”

How many times have you been engaged in moments of thought when you can see with absolute clarity what you REALLY want to become / have etc? Remember that feeling of total absorption and the lift that you experienced being in that moment.

What are you afraid of?

Then what happened? “Reality” intervened and you started to think of all the obstacles on the way to achieving it and began to experience self doubt about your ability to achieve that vision.

Is it actually that you are afraid of that vision because you know it means that you will have to step outside your comfort zone to achieve it. Is it that you just can’t figure out what needs to be done and how long it will take to do it… what is it that you are really afraid of?

Just F*n Do It

You know what you want…. you have had the internal feeling of what it is like to be where you want to be and be who/what you want to be.   To get there in life you need to keep moving forward towards that vision and no matter what obstacles appear you need to press on. Every one of those obstacles represents a chance for you to re-affirm your vision and your desire and remember to make progress towards it every single day.

What hurdles do you have to overcome and what is going to make you go on JFDI!  Let me know in the comments.

Just F****N do it!

Just Do It!

Just Do It!

Noticed a trend recently! There is a ton of stuff on PROCRASTINATION and ways to over it come it.

Some of it has been great reading thanks to these guys…..

fitjerk , Karol (but like I said Karol… it’s not procrastination if it’s fuel for something else) Rob Sutton , Patrick , Charlie

I had a boss who fitjerk would love (thanks Andy) who had a real simple approach to overcoming the procrastination monster, we’d be talking about one thing or another, discussion a problem talking about a solution and it always ended with the same advice….. and it’s not contrary to my efforts for patience, but it definitely is persistence…

” Mick….JFDI ! ” or in case you missed the subtlety of the title ” Just F****N DO IT” , now I reckon Andy had this in the bag long before NIKE decided to make it a corporate logo/phrase (after all Andy was getting on a bit {sorry andy}

Now Andy is retired, but that voice rattles around in my head whenever the procrastination monster begins to chatter in my head (what you don’t have those little voices?)

So next time your  thinking “I really should be doing….xxxx”  take my old bosses advice and JFDI.
