How to stop being afraid !

Get over Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

If you have ever spent any time studying any form of management or self development then someone would have subjected you to Maslow’s heirarchy of needs. If you are like me, you would probably be happy to never hear that term again (as relevant as it is).

It doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for Maslow, in fact one of Maslow’s quotes provides a great opportunity for reflection.

The top end of the pyramid

Abraham Maslow is quoted as saying “We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments”

How many times have you been engaged in moments of thought when you can see with absolute clarity what you REALLY want to become / have etc? Remember that feeling of total absorption and the lift that you experienced being in that moment.

What are you afraid of?

Then what happened? “Reality” intervened and you started to think of all the obstacles on the way to achieving it and began to experience self doubt about your ability to achieve that vision.

Is it actually that you are afraid of that vision because you know it means that you will have to step outside your comfort zone to achieve it. Is it that you just can’t figure out what needs to be done and how long it will take to do it… what is it that you are really afraid of?

Just F*n Do It

You know what you want…. you have had the internal feeling of what it is like to be where you want to be and be who/what you want to be.   To get there in life you need to keep moving forward towards that vision and no matter what obstacles appear you need to press on. Every one of those obstacles represents a chance for you to re-affirm your vision and your desire and remember to make progress towards it every single day.

What hurdles do you have to overcome and what is going to make you go on JFDI!  Let me know in the comments.

  1. Part of the JFDI message is about not getting trapped in the negative dialogue that often accompanies some of that lack of confidence. If you can identify that it is a lack of confidence that is holding you back, then you are in a position to include the self talk go ahead and JFDI…. continuing to say “you know what, I'm going to go ahead a JFDI ultimately helps to build confidence and prevent inaction caused by a lack of confidence.

  2. Thanks for adding this great list from Tony Robbins. Part of the trick is figuring out which of these is being aimed at… once you know what is driving the need you can then make a decision to take action (not taking action is an option but inaction leads to stagnation) so at the end of the process… there is still a need to JFDI.

  3. Hi Mick,

I think sometimes the fear is that deep down inside you worry that maybe you can't do it. Maybe you're not smart enough, or you feel you're deficient in ways that make it impossible for you to succeed.

I think that you have to build your self-confidence to the point where you honestly feel like you can and will be successful. Only then will you have the courage to get out of your comfort zone and do the things you need to do to create the success you want.

  4. The root of the reality problem is that we are all subjected to two major fears in life Mick. Fear of failure and fear of rejection.

The reason for people giving themselves a reality check is that they get hit by one of those fears.

Another needs system that is really worth investigating is the one Tony Robbins uses which states that everyone, in everything they do, tries to meet one or more of the 6 human needs.

    They are the need for….

    Certainty
    Variety
    Significance
    Love and Connection
    Personal Growth
    Contribution

When you look at everyone's actions with that filter on lots of people's motivations start to make sense.

  5. Thanks Chris, It becomes easier to stop being afraid when you can identify what it is that make you feel that way and have some tools to help you work through that. The back link articles have a couple of tools for overcoming the fear by breaking it down into workable tasks for which you can set realistic plans.

  6. Talk about a kick up the backside :) Yes, I think the fear comes when I realise that to achieve what I really want to be will be damned hard work! …that there will be sacrifices and pain. Somehow the perfect vision gets swamped by those thoughts.

    JFDI… good advice!
